Snorkelling Field Trip

Today we went on a field trip to see life in the ocean around our island. At Stingray City we saw the southern Atlantic stingrays up close, then it was on to Coral Gardens to snorkel. We saw many different kinds of coral and fish which we researched and identified once back in the classroom.

The Weddie Carvin Connolly Beach Project

As you can see we have been very busy cleaning up the beach. We were very pleased to have some help from Miss Irene and Mr Rodolpho from the Dept. of Environment. It was hot work, but we really enjoyed it.

Recycling Paper.

If we keep cutting down trees for paper, in the future we will have no more! So RECYCLING is a very important thing to do. It's not that difficult. We can show you how!

Taster Visit to George Hicks School

Today year six had a visit to the George Hicks Campus in George Town. This is where they will be going for year seven in September until the Clifton Hunter Campus is ready. Here are a few short reflections of their day:

On Tuesday 9th March the year 6’s from Bodden Town, North Side and East End went to GHHS and took a tour around the school. A group and I went around Heritage and our tour guide was named Franklin. We saw people swimming for PE.

The George Hicks visit was awesome even though at first I was nervous. I met my buddy for the first period, it was maths and the teacher’s name was Ms Ashby. I was seated next to my buddy.

When I got there I was very nervous, then I started to get happy. I learned about the four different schools, the classes and what they do there. In wood shop they make different wood items and today a girl made a heart shaped key holder. It was very cute! I can’t wait till I go in all the classes, but I surely don’t want to go to the suspension unit. My partner’s names were Feliciana and Jamal. After that we had a snack and go on the bus. I had a wonderful time at the George Hicks Campus.

I was so nervous, but we got to the school just on time. My whole class got name tags to put on their shirts and then we went to the hall. Mrs Blackman spoke to us about what we would be doing for the next two hours. All the children that had the number four were going to Heritage School. The girl that guided us was Kristina, she took us all over. Then we went to break and I got a pattie and a yummy drink. I had a smile on my face because I was very excited to come to George Hicks. Mrs Blackman gave a short speech and thanked us for coming. Then we went on the bus back to school.

I have to admit I felt a little nervous at first, but it was the tour of my life! I got to see all of the classrooms inside and out. My tour guide was a very tall girl. Then I got a chance to go in a math class. Finally we made it back to the hall. After the tour I felt very comfortable with the whole middle school stuff.

Cayman Islands National Museum

The Cayman Islands National Museum in George Town is a fascinating place to visit. We learned a great deal about our cultural heritage and the natural resources of our islands when we visited on Thursday. Preserving the past for future generations is very important!

World Maths Day Class Champion

We worked very hard on World Maths Day and played with children from many different countries. It was very exciting! Congratulations to Jessica who had the highest score in our class and to Joe who had the most improved score. Well done everyone!

Marvellous mangroves

Salt and fresh water experiment.

Cleaning up an oil spill is difficult!

Making a food web, the mangroves are vital!

Wow plankton is awesome!

Who can see the jellyfish, anemones, seahorses?

We got VERY close to the mangrove roots!

We have had three days of Mangrove education and it has been awesome! Miss Marnie from Sea Elements taught us all about the importance of the mangroves around our shores. We watched videos, did experiments, used microscopes and had a trip out into North Sound to see the mangroves close up. We also learned all about the coral reef and some of the endangered creatures that are out there. CUC even came and gave us a safety demonstration about electricity.

Rock On!

We have been finding out all about rocks and minerals as part of our IB unit "Rock On!". We have collected and studied the rocks around us and found out that most rock on the Cayman Islands is limestone - a sedimentary rock. We have learned about the rock cycle and some of the different ways ancient civilisations used rock. We are growing our own crystals in the classsroom and we have even made Rocky Road cookies to eat!
